Jenrose: Music
Under the Red, White, and Blue
(Jenrose and the Kentucky Bootleggers)
For those who think flags hanging everywhere can only mean one thing... don't believe the hype. There are many kinds of patriots lingering "under the red, white and blue."
Lookin’ out at the road
From the front porch
Waitin’ on a friend
Comin’ in from the north
The street’s lined with flags
As he pulls in the drive
And I see him rolling his eyes
And I’ve seen it before
That look on his face
He’s thinkin’ the roads here
Have nothin’ but right lanes
He thinks that these flags mean
We all think the same
Down here
But there’s all kinds of stars
And all kinds of stripes
Some lean to the left
Some lean to the right
Ya know that red, white and blue
It aint all black and white
Around here
(So I tell him)
When you see these stripes
And you see these stars
Hangin’ from porches
And neighborhood cars
Just let them remind you
Of all that we are
Under the red, white and blue
Now everyone’s drinkin’
On the back steps
My friend says she’s thinkin’
Of moving out west
Says the weight of the world
Has been dragging her down
Here in this Bible-Belt town
And I admit there are times
When these flags can breed fear
And the ocean sounds fine
But my roots are here
Where all my rednecks
And my hippie friends
Can still grab a beer
At the same bar
Cuz these colors run deep
And these colors run far
Some fly them for peace
Some fly them for war
United we stand
Still free
And divided
We are
(So I tell her)
When I see these stripes
And I see these stars
Hangin’ from fences
And painted on barns
I just let them remind me
Of all that we are
Under the red, white and blue
Bridge:
And these stars and these stripes
From the left to the right
Have become such a habit with me
We’ve got all different kinds
And we toe our own lines
Cuz we know what it is to be free…
So when you see these stripes
And you see these stars
Hangin’ from fences
And neighborhood bars
I hope they remind you
Of all that we are
Under the red, white and blue
Under the red, white and blue
